¡La batalla definitiva está por comenzar en Tokio! Cada quinientos años se celebra la legendaria Guerra de los Chamanes, un torneo donde los chamanes, seres capaces de comunicarse y controlar espíritus, se enfrentan en combates épicos. El ganador obtendrá el título de Rey Chamán, el único con el poder de contactar y dominar al Gran Espíritu, y así, con su inmensa fuerza, podrá moldear el mundo a su antojo.
En medio de esta atmósfera, Manta Oyamada se cruza con su compañero de clase, el despreocupado Yoh Asakura. Lo que Manta no imagina es que esta noche de "observación de estrellas" lo llevará a conocer a fantasmas de un cementerio cercano. Sin embargo, el don de Manta, una rara habilidad para ver espíritus, lo convierte en alguien especial para Yoh. Cuando Yoh descubre que su nuevo amigo ha sido maltratado por una pandilla local, decide defenderlo con la ayuda de Amidamaru, un valiente espíritu samurái.
Así, Manta se adentra en el fascinante mundo de los espíritus y descubre la Guerra de los Chamanes, el torneo en el que su amigo Yoh aspira a convertirse en el campeón.
