El joven Keiichi Maebara llega al apacible pueblo de Hinamizawa en el verano de 1983, buscando un nuevo comienzo. Pronto, se une a un grupo de amigos inseparables: Rena Ryuuguu, Mion Sonozaki, Satoko Houjou y Rika Furude. La vida parece idílica, pero bajo esa aparente tranquilidad, se esconde una oscuridad insondable.
A medida que se acerca el festival anual del pueblo, Keiichi descubre leyendas inquietantes. Para su espanto, se entera de recientes asesinatos y desapariciones ligadas al festival y al dios patrón del pueblo, Oyashiro. Sus intentos por obtener respuestas de sus nuevos amigos son recibidos con un silencio sospechoso, lo que aumenta su desconfianza. Eventos cada vez más extraños lo hacen cuestionar hasta dónde llega el secreto de sus amigos y si realmente puede confiar en ellos.
La locura y la paranoia comienzan a apoderarse de Keiichi, arrastrándolo de lleno en los misterios de Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, una historia que se desvela a través de múltiples arcos narrativos.
