En un futuro desolado, la Tierra es un páramo y la humanidad ha desaparecido. Solo quedan robots con conciencia, condenados a una existencia que debería ser eterna. Sin embargo, tras la muerte de Luna, una misteriosa "Ruina" comenzó a afectar sus cuerpos, provocando un óxido implacable e incurable. Ahora, estos seres mecánicos solo pueden esperar su inevitable final, aferrándose a un rumor desesperado: devorar a Casshern les otorgará la inmortalidad.
Casshern, por su parte, no recuerda nada de su pasado, ni su propósito, ni siquiera su propia naturaleza. Despojado de su memoria, se ve perseguido por robots que buscan desesperadamente prolongar sus vidas. A donde quiera que vaya, Casshern deja un rastro de destrucción, pero solo enfrentando la muerte y desentrañando los secretos de este mundo moribundo podrá descubrir la verdad sobre su existencia y el trágico destino que los aqueja.
