En su decimoquinto cumpleaños, la vida de Kagome Higurashi da un giro inesperado. Un demonio la arrastra al antiguo pozo del santuario de su familia, transportándola a una era feudal donde las criaturas demoníacas son una amenaza constante. Pronto, Kagome se ve acosada por estos seres, quienes codician un objeto que ella lleva sin saberlo: la Perla de Shikon, una gema de inmenso poder.
En medio del caos, Kagome se topa con Inuyasha, un joven mitad demonio que la confunde con Kikyo, una sacerdotisa a la que parece guardar rencor. Inicialmente, Inuyasha muestra hostilidad hacia Kagome por su parecido con Kikyo. Sin embargo, al comprender la gravedad de su situación, deja a un lado sus diferencias y decide ayudarla.
La situación se complica cuando, en una batalla por la Perla de Shikon, esta se rompe en innumerables fragmentos que se esparcen por todo el país. Ante el peligro de que los fragmentos caigan en manos equivocadas, Kagome e Inuyasha emprenden una ardua misión para reunirlos antes de que el mal se apodere de ellos.
