Nils Holgersson es un niño travieso que vive en una granja, conocido por su maltrato hacia los animales. Un día, su crueldad llega al límite cuando captura a un duende de la granja. Como castigo por sus fechorías, Nils es encogido mágicamente a un tamaño diminuto, y ahora los animales de la granja buscan venganza.
Aterrorizado, Nils huye a lomos de Morten, un pequeño ganso. Juntos, se unen a una bandada de gansos salvajes y emprenden un viaje épico por toda Suecia. A lo largo de su aventura, Nils anhela encontrar la manera de recuperar su tamaño original, mientras aprende valiosas lecciones sobre el respeto y la empatía hacia los animales.
